Vinyl vs Digital : Why Vinyl and Digital rarely sound identical

An assumption among some music lovers is that if a vinyl record and a high resolution digital release originate from the same recording, they should sound identical. In practice, they generally don't. While personal preference will decide individual choice in the “analogue vs digital” debate the differences are real. The first thing to understand is that music doesn't go straight from the recording studio onto a record or into a digital file. Every release passes through a production chain that includes recording, mixing and, finally, mastering. Only after these stages is the music prepared for its final format.

Recording and mastering analogue versus digital

Today almost all productions involve digital technology somewhere in the process. Some recordings remain fully analogue using multitrack tape recording, analogue mixing desks, mastering to stereo tape and directly to the cutting lathe but this is rare. Once a recording is released on CD, SACD or as a digital download, digital conversion has inevitably become part of the signal chain.

Converting from analogue to digital changes the nature of the signal. An analogue waveform is transformed into digital information through sampling, then converted back into an analogue signal before it reaches the loudspeakers. Vinyl follows a different path. Even when both versions originate from the same master, they are not identical copies travelling through identical systems. Each format requires its own technical preparation and its own playback chain.

Mastering plays an equally important role. Contrary to popular belief, the vinyl edition is not generally cut from the same master used for streaming or CD. Engineers frequently create a dedicated vinyl master to account for the physical limitations of the medium. Extreme stereo bass, excessive loudness or aggressive high frequencies can all create tracking problems on a record, so adjustments are made to create a master for the cutting lathe. This means that listeners may be comparing two different masters as well as two different formats.

The difference in playback for vinyl and digital

Playback equipment adds another layer of variation. A digital file ultimately depends on the quality of the digital-to-analogue converter inside a streamer, CD player or computer whilst vinyl playback is shaped by the cartridge, tonearm, phono preamplifier and turntable setup. With vinyl record players small differences in alignment, component quality and positioning can noticeably change the final sound so it's important to understand how turntables work and should be positioned.

Only after all these stages does the signal reach the loudspeakers, moving air that our ears pickup as sound waves and our brains interpret as music. By that point, countless variables have influenced what we actually hear. From a purely technical perspective, digital formats offer several measurable advantages. High-resolution digital audio can provide greater dynamic range, wider channel separation and is free from surface noise, mechanical rumble and wear that are part of vinyl playback.

Yet figures are only part of the story

Many listeners describe vinyl as warmer, smoother or more engaging. Some of that impression comes from mastering choices, some from the vinyl manufacturing process and some from the subtle distortions and colourations that are inherent in mechanical reproduction. Whether these characteristics are flaws or virtues depends entirely on the listener.

In the end, the question isn't which format is objectively better, both are capable of exceptional sound when produced and reproduced well. Perhaps a more interesting question is why they sound different in the first place, and the answer lies not in a simple battle between analogue and digital, but in every step of the journey from the studio to your ears.
