The world of physical music is changing fast and so are the expectations around how it’s made and its impact on the environment. At Breed our role is to track these developments and work with leading manufacturing partners so we can help artists, labels and creators make informed, realistic and genuinely impactful decisions about what you can do right now. No greenwashing. No over claiming. Just practical steps that make your project more sustainable without compromising the creativity or the product experience.

How to make your vinyl more sustainable

Vinyl choices that make a difference

Skip the heavyweight

140g records use less material, press beautifully, and cut down on transport emissions.

Regrinds & Ecomix

Pressings made with reground material in a closed-loop system reduce waste and create unique colour effects.

Bioattributed PVC

Same sound, same quality — but made with reduced impact raw materials through certified mass balance systems, reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Nextwave formats

Injection moulded PET records are emerging as a lower energy option using commonly recycled plastics.

Packaging that works harder with less impact

Paper & board first

FSCcertified card and paperbased packaging options across sleeves, outers and print.

Low impact inks

We prioritise vegetablebased inks wherever possible.

Special finishes without the footprint

Diecutting, embossing, lasercutting and clever structural design can elevate your package without adding plastic, foil or lamination.

Swap out the foam

Card fitments and clever paper engineering keep products protected and fully recyclable.

Practical steps that add up

  • Reduce unnecessary components
  • Consolidate formats and quantities
  • Use recycled or recyclable materials wherever possible
  • Avoid unnecessary use of plastic in packaging

We’ll walk you through all of these during your project so your choices fit your budget, your brand and your sustainability goals.

Sustainability FAQs and Info

Yes. Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) is a more sustainable option compared to Lacquers for a number of reasons. Firstly during processing at the pressing plant lacquers require two additional stages to create a negative (‘Father’) and a positive Positive (‘Mother’) which requires additional chemicals and energy consumption. Secondly the lacquer, which is made from an aluminium plate coated in nitrocellulose, cannot be recycled.

No. The bio-attributed PVC still uses fossil-derived material but crucially it also contains plant-based alternatives introduced during manufacture to reduce the fossil input. A certified mass balance approach is used throughout manufacture to ensure the proportions are carefully controlled.
